A heartbreaking discovery has been made in the search for Paul Rodriguez Jr., a 43-year-old Juneau resident who went missing on Mendenhall Lake on July 11th. A recovered helmet-mounted GoPro, confirmed to be Rodriguez's, appears to have captured the tragic moment his kayak capsized in the glacial waters. Despite ongoing search efforts by authorities, his body has yet to be recovered.

Initially, a lone kayak with no identifying markings was found on the lake the same day Rodriguez disappeared. A passerby reported the discovery, indicating no signs of distress in the area at the time. However, a good Samaritan later found the GoPro camera and helmet along the shore and handed it over to authorities. The footage revealed the tragic turn of events, showing Rodriguez's kayak overturning in the lake's challenging conditions, including a strong current flowing from the glacier, according to Alaska State Troopers spokesperson Tim DeSpain.

Prior to the incident, Rodriguez had shared social media posts featuring a kayak on a beach seemingly near Nugget Falls, a recreational spot adjacent to Mendenhall Lake. It is believed he was not wearing a life jacket or appropriate cold-water gear at the time of the accident. The discovery of his vehicle, parked at the recreation area since July 11th, further corroborated the unfortunate circumstances. Rodriguez’s roommate last reported seeing him on July 10th.

Rodriguez's son, Jaden, shared memories of his father, describing him as a kind individual who found solace in his faith and enjoyed outdoor pursuits such as fishing, paddleboarding, snowboarding, and photography. "He was a good person," Jaden stated.
