Biden's Remarks on Carter's 'Decency' Spark Conservative Backlash

Created: JANUARY 26, 2025

President Biden's recent comments praising the late Jimmy Carter's "decency" and implicitly contrasting it with Donald Trump's conduct have ignited controversy among conservatives. Following Carter's passing at 100, Biden responded to a reporter's question about what Trump could learn from Carter's legacy with the word "decency," repeating it for emphasis. He further questioned whether Carter would ever ignore someone in need or judge individuals based on their appearance or speech.

This comparison drew sharp criticism from various conservative figures. Radio host Hugh Hewitt questioned Biden's own "decency," citing what he called a "cover-up" regarding Biden's condition and alleged media complicity. Legal analyst Jonathan Turley highlighted Biden's pardon of his son Hunter, contrasting it with the scrutiny faced by Carter's brother Billy during Carter's presidency. Turley pointed to Biden's campaign promise not to pardon Hunter and alleged connections to influence-peddling. Radio host Joe Pagliarulo labeled Biden's remarks hypocritical, accusing him of enriching himself and his family through influence. Newsweek's Josh Hammer also criticized Biden's comments, arguing that Carter's legacy was "not good." Animator Doug TenNapel criticized Biden's presidency and suggested that Biden's focus should be on his own faith.

Despite past clashes, Trump paid tribute to Carter on Truth Social, acknowledging the shared experience of the presidency and expressing gratitude for Carter's service to the nation. He noted Carter's efforts to improve American lives during a challenging period. Trump also acknowledged his philosophical and political differences with Carter but recognized Carter's love and respect for the United States. Carter, who also served as Georgia's governor, became the oldest living former president in October. He was elected president in 1976 but lost his re-election bid to Ronald Reagan in 1980. His wife, Rosalynn Carter, passed away in 2023.
