The Justice Department has formally requested the dismissal of all charges against two individuals previously indicted alongside former President Donald Trump in the classified documents case. This action effectively concludes the special counsel's investigation, which commenced over two years ago.
Acting U.S. Attorney in Miami, Hayden O’Byrne, submitted the motion to drop the charges against Carlos De Oliveira, a Mar-a-Lago property manager, and Walt Nauta, a valet at the property, without providing specific reasons for the dismissal.
The two men faced charges related to conspiring with Trump to obstruct the investigation and making false statements to the FBI. Special Counsel Jack Smith, appointed by Attorney General Merrick Garland in 2022, originally led the investigation into Trump's handling of classified documents after leaving office. This investigation, along with a separate probe into alleged efforts to overturn the 2020 election results, was suspended following Trump's 2024 re-election, adhering to the DOJ's policy against investigating sitting presidents.
Earlier this year, lawyers for Nauta and De Oliveira attempted to block the release of Smith's report, arguing that its publication would cause irreparable harm to their clients.
Despite the conclusion of the special counsel investigations, the dismissal of charges against De Oliveira and Nauta marks a significant development in the legal proceedings surrounding the former president.
