Actor David Tennant, hosting the 2025 British Academy Film Awards (BAFTAs), didn't shy away from targeting former President Donald Trump during his opening monologue. He drew comparisons between Trump and various movie villains, including Nosferatu and Hugh Grant's character in "Heretic." One particularly pointed joke involved likening the architecture in the nominated film "The Brutalist" to Trump's hairstyle in "The Apprentice." Tennant quipped, "It’s the boldest architecture in film this year, apart from Donald Trump’s hair in ‘The Apprentice.’"
He also joked about Trump's alleged unfamiliarity with the film due to its rating, saying, "Donald Trump, he says he hasn’t seen ‘The Apprentice,’ because it’s a [British rating] 15. It’s not on Nickelodeon." Tennant then expressed mock concern about repeatedly mentioning Trump's name, comparing it to summoning Beetlejuice.
The BBC, which broadcast the awards, reportedly edited out some of Tennant's Trump-related jokes for time constraints, including the Beetlejuice comparison. However, the full, unedited monologue was later made available online. A BBC spokesperson explained the edits were necessary due to the live broadcast's tight schedule.
This wasn't Tennant's first time using the BAFTAs as a platform to poke fun at Trump. During the 2024 ceremony, he made a joke connecting the film "Poor Things" – which features a child's brain in an adult's body – to the possibility of Trump's re-election.
