A member of the U.S. Marine Corps was taken into custody in late June following the discovery of a missing 14-year-old girl within the barracks at Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton in Oceanside, California.

The teenager's grandmother reported her missing on June 13th, stating the girl had run away from home a few days earlier. Sheriff's deputies visited the grandmother's residence that day, filed a missing person report, and entered the teen's information into relevant databases.

Military police at Camp Pendleton subsequently located the teenager and notified the sheriff's department. Detectives interviewed the teen before returning her to her grandmother.

A Marine assigned to Combat Logistics Battalion 5, 1st Marine Logistics Group, was detained for questioning by the Naval Criminal Investigative Services (NCIS) on June 28th. NCIS is the primary agency overseeing the investigation. The nature of the Marine's relationship with the missing teen remains unclear.

Neither the identity of the detained Marine nor the recovered teenager has been publicly released.

Because Camp Pendleton is federal property, NCIS is leading the investigation. They are receiving support from the sheriff's department and the San Diego Human Trafficking Task Force.
