McCartney Jokes Springsteen's Fault for Lengthy Concerts Today

Created: JANUARY 18, 2025

Musician Paul McCartney recently reflected on the changing landscape of concert performances, humorously pointing to Bruce Springsteen as the reason for today's marathon shows. In a chat on Conan O'Brien's podcast, "Conan O'Brien Needs a Friend," McCartney contrasted the Beatles' brief 30-minute sets in the 1960s with the multi-hour performances now common among artists.

McCartney highlighted the variety acts of the past, where multiple performers shared the stage, leading to shorter individual sets. He jokingly blamed Springsteen for the shift, claiming he's told him, "It’s your fault!" Even though McCartney himself now performs longer solo shows, he reminisced about the Beatles' era, when a half-hour set was considered substantial. He recalled a time when comedians were booked for mere minutes, making the Beatles' 30-minute performances seem epic.

This isn't the first time this topic has come up. In a 2020 interview with O'Brien, Springsteen himself acknowledged playing "too f------ long" and jokingly accepted responsibility for setting a precedent for lengthy concerts. He agreed that the Beatles' shorter sets sounded appealing in comparison.

In addition to his concert reflections, McCartney also recently shared that he contemplated leaving music altogether following the Beatles' disbandment in 1970. In his newsletter, the 81-year-old musician admitted to questioning whether to continue his musical journey after such a monumental chapter. Ultimately, the risk of pursuing a solo career paid off handsomely for the now-legendary artist.
