Soros-Linked PAC Fuels Democratic Fundraising Advantage in Virginia Legislative Races

Created: JANUARY 17, 2025

Democratic candidates vying for seats in the Virginia legislature have established a fundraising lead over their Republican rivals, partially fueled by contributions from a political action committee connected to George Soros. This financial edge comes at a pivotal moment for the state's political landscape, with Virginia recently electing a Republican governor for the first time in over a decade and both parties eyeing opportunities to gain ground in the legislature.

Data from the Virginia Public Access Project, a nonpartisan organization tracking money in politics, reveals that candidates for the Virginia Senate and House of Delegates collectively raised over $20 million between April 1 and June 8. Democratic candidates secured approximately $14 million of this total. The primary election is scheduled for Tuesday, June 20, 2023.

A significant portion of the fundraising activity is concentrated in Northern Virginia, where a Soros-funded PAC has invested heavily in local prosecutor races. This includes support for incumbent commonwealth's attorneys in Arlington, Fairfax, and Loudoun counties, many of whom campaigned on criminal justice reform platforms four years ago and are now seeking reelection.

Arlington Commonwealth’s Attorney Parisa Dehghani-Tafti has amassed $437,775, with the majority originating from the Soros-affiliated Justice and Public Safety PAC. Fairfax County Commonwealth’s Attorney Steve Descano has raised $208,468, also benefiting from contributions linked to the PAC. Loudoun County Commonwealth’s Attorney Buta Biberaj has raised $163,838, although without direct funding from Soros.

The Virginia Public Access Project's analysis indicates that Democratic legislative candidates hold a substantial cash-on-hand advantage, with approximately $2 million more in Senate races and $400,000 more in House races. All ten of the top fundraisers for legislative seats are Democrats. The higher number of contested Democratic Senate primaries compared to Republican primaries is another factor contributing to the fundraising disparity.

It's important to note that the reported figures do not encompass fundraising by committees such as Governor Glenn Youngkin's Spirit of Virginia, focusing solely on individual candidates competing in the upcoming November election.

While Democrats have a financial lead, the fundraising landscape also reveals internal competition, with well-funded challengers attempting to unseat established incumbents. Virginia's campaign finance laws permit unlimited contributions from individuals, corporations, and special interest groups.
