Golden State Warriors coach Steve Kerr shared the heartbreaking news on Thursday that his family home in Pacific Palisades was lost to the raging Southern California wildfires. Speaking to reporters before the Warriors' game against the Detroit Pistons, a somber Kerr confirmed the devastating loss. "My family is safe, thankfully, and my mom is being well taken care of, but her house is completely gone," Kerr stated.
He described the scene in Pacific Palisades as surreal and utterly devastating, a town seemingly wiped off the map. While acknowledging the tragedy, Kerr expressed relief that most residents managed to escape. The rebuilding process for the community, he noted, would be an immense undertaking.
The wildfires, fueled by strong winds, have claimed at least seven lives and destroyed approximately 10,000 structures, stretching from the Pacific Coast to Pasadena. Kerr's family home, purchased by his parents over five decades ago, held a lifetime of memories. He reflected on recently having dinner there just two weeks prior and celebrating his mother's 90th birthday at the house last summer.
While acknowledging the irreplaceable nature of the loss, Kerr emphasized the distinction between loss of property and loss of life, grateful that his loved ones were safe. As of Thursday evening, containment of the largest fire in Pacific Palisades stood at a mere 6%, highlighting the ongoing struggle to control the blaze.
