Trump Leads GOP Primary Despite Indictments, But Some Voters Seek New Leadership

Created: JANUARY 25, 2025

Despite facing federal charges related to classified documents, former President Trump maintains a substantial lead in the Republican primary race, according to a recent NBC News poll. While 51% of GOP voters favor Trump, a significant portion express reservations about his continued leadership within the party.

The poll reveals Trump's dominance, with 51% of Republican voters choosing him as their preferred candidate. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis trails with 22%, followed by former Vice President Mike Pence at 7%. These figures show a slight shift from April's poll, conducted shortly after Trump's indictment in New York, where he held 46% support compared to DeSantis's 31%.

A notable 77% of Republican primary voters expressed minimal concern regarding the federal charges against Trump, with 63% stating no real concerns and 14% indicating minor concerns. A majority, 64%, believe the various investigations and indictments targeting Trump are politically motivated. This contrasts sharply with the broader electorate, where 55% of registered voters express moderate to major concerns about the charges.

In a hypothetical matchup against DeSantis, Trump secures a commanding 60% of Republican voter support, leaving DeSantis at 36%. However, a hypothetical contest against President Biden presents a tighter race, with Biden narrowly leading at 49% and Trump at 45%. Interestingly, a considerable 68% of respondents expressed concern over Biden's physical and mental health.

While nearly half of GOP voters endorse Trump's continued party leadership, 21% suggest it's time to consider alternatives, acknowledging his past presidency but advocating for new leadership. The June indictment, stemming from the classified documents case at Mar-a-Lago, marked an unprecedented event – a former president facing federal criminal charges. These charges encompass willful retention of national defense information, conspiracy to obstruct justice, and making false statements.

Following his court appearance, Trump vehemently denounced the indictment, labeling it a politically motivated "sham" and "election interference" orchestrated by the Biden administration. He further criticized Special Counsel Jack Smith, characterizing him as a "deranged lunatic," and condemned Biden for the arrest and indictment of his primary political rival.
