Veteran QB Andy Dalton Stays with Panthers on Two-Year Deal

Created: JANUARY 25, 2025

Veteran quarterback Andy Dalton has reportedly agreed to a two-year contract extension with the Carolina Panthers, solidifying his role as a mentor and backup to Bryce Young. The deal, worth $8 million with $6 million guaranteed and incentives that could push the total to $10 million, ensures Dalton's presence in Carolina for the foreseeable future.

Andy Dalton looks on

Dalton, a three-time Pro Bowler, joined the Panthers in 2023, serving as a veteran presence behind the young starter. He stepped in when Young was briefly benched earlier in the season, leading the team to a victory against the Las Vegas Raiders with a 319-yard, three-touchdown performance. However, a subsequent car accident and Young's return to form limited Dalton's playing time for the remainder of the year.

Andy Dalton warms up

Dalton's extensive NFL career includes nine seasons with the Cincinnati Bengals, where he earned his Pro Bowl nods. He also had stints with the Dallas Cowboys, Chicago Bears, and New Orleans Saints before landing in Carolina. Over his 14 seasons, he has amassed 39,500 passing yards, 253 touchdowns, and 150 interceptions.

Bryce Young and Andy Dalton embrace

The Panthers hope Young's development will minimize the need for Dalton to take the field. Young, the first overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, showed significant improvement after returning from his brief benching, culminating in a strong performance in the season finale against the Atlanta Falcons. With Young at the helm, the Panthers look to the future with optimism, while Dalton provides valuable experience and support.
