Following a tanker truck fire that led to the collapse of a section of I-95 in Philadelphia last weekend, President Biden has committed full federal support for the reconstruction efforts. Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro announced an ambitious two-week timeline for reopening the crucial highway segment, a timeframe aimed at minimizing disruption for commuters and the trucking industry.

During a Saturday press briefing at Philadelphia International Airport, following an aerial survey of the damage with President Biden, members of Congress, and Philadelphia's mayor, Governor Shapiro expressed confidence in the rapid restoration plan. "We are getting it done here in Philly," he stated, emphasizing the collective effort and renewed sense of civic pride surrounding the project.

President Biden underscored the federal government's initial and ongoing commitment to rebuilding I-95, recognizing its vital role in the regional and national economy. With over 150,000 vehicles, including 14,000 trucks, relying on the highway daily, its closure has significant implications for both economic activity and daily life.

Pennsylvania's innovative approach to expedite repairs involves utilizing 2,000 tons of lightweight recycled glass to fill the collapsed section, circumventing potential supply chain delays for traditional materials. A temporary replacement bridge will be constructed alongside the fill, enabling traffic flow while the original exit ramp is restored. President Biden praised this resourceful solution, highlighting its potential to achieve record-time reconstruction.

Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, who visited the site earlier in the week, pledged federal assistance and acknowledged the potential for short-term increases in consumer goods costs due to rerouted trucking traffic.
