He suggested a political motivation behind these denials, arguing that maintaining the facade of impartiality during the presidential race against Donald Trump was strategically advantageous for Biden and his supporters. This allowed them to draw a contrast between the current and former presidents, positioning Biden as a defender of the rule of law.

The pardon, issued on Sunday, covers Hunter Biden's convictions on tax charges and felony gun charges. President Biden justified the decision by claiming Hunter was unfairly targeted due to his family ties, asserting an attempt to attack him through his son. However, Tapper countered this narrative by citing Special Counsel David Weiss's statement denying any vindictive or selective prosecution in the case.

Tapper also highlighted past statements by Biden allies praising the President's supposed commitment to the rule of law by not pardoning his son. These statements now appear ironic in light of the pardon. Tapper argued that President Biden's actions not only contradict his previous pronouncements but also undermine the Justice Department's authority.
