Bill Gates Voices Concern Over Potential USAID Cuts, Foresees Dire Consequences

Created: JANUARY 27, 2025

Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates expressed apprehension regarding potential reductions to the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) during a recent appearance on "The View." He warned that such cuts could have devastating consequences, potentially leading to millions of fatalities.

Gates specifically addressed concerns about Elon Musk's influence on governmental affairs, stating, "While Elon's private sector innovations have been remarkable, many individuals transitioning from the private sector to government fail to grasp the importance of existing structures and the valuable work being done. I'm particularly worried about the potential impact on USAID." He emphasized the vital role his foundation plays in collaborating with USAID on crucial initiatives like nutrition programs and vaccine distribution.

Responding to co-host Sara Haines's inquiry about Musk's involvement with the U.S. government, Gates highlighted the dedicated individuals within USAID, stating, "There are incredibly competent people working there. Their efforts are essential, and if their work is disrupted, the consequences could be dire, potentially resulting in millions of deaths." He underscored the importance of restoring and supporting USAID's operations.

Gates also addressed public misconceptions about the percentage of the budget allocated to foreign aid. He clarified that it's less than one percent, contrary to the common belief that it's much higher. He pointed out that many people mistakenly believe it's 5% or even think it should be 2%, when in reality it's significantly lower.

Recent reports indicate that USAID's Washington headquarters was temporarily closed, with some staff members experiencing locked computer systems. Internal communications attributed the closure to "the direction of Agency leadership." Musk has publicly criticized USAID on social media, calling it a "criminal organization."
