Following the mid-season dismissal of Dennis Allen, the New Orleans Saints continue their search for a new head coach. While several candidates are under consideration, Buffalo Bills Offensive Coordinator Joe Brady has removed himself from the running, opting to remain in his current position. According to NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport, the Saints were interested in a second interview with Brady, but he prefers to stay focused on the Bills' offense.
Brady's name had been circulating in connection with other head coaching vacancies as well. His decision comes as the Saints evaluate various options to lead their team after a disappointing season that began with promise but quickly derailed, leading to Allen's departure.
The Saints started the 2024 season strong with two dominant victories, but a subsequent seven-game losing streak prompted team owner Gayle Benson to make the difficult choice to replace Allen. In a statement at the time, Benson expressed her respect for Allen's professionalism and contributions to the organization.
Allen finished his tenure in New Orleans with an 18-25 record, transitioning to the head coaching role after seven seasons as the Saints' defensive coordinator. Reports suggest he is now a leading contender for the defensive coordinator position with the Chicago Bears.
Meanwhile, former Saints head coach Sean Payton, who led the team to their Super Bowl victory, returned to coaching in 2023 with the Denver Broncos after a brief stint in broadcasting.
The Saints have interviewed several other candidates, including Darren Rizzi, Mike Kafka, Anthony Weaver, and Kellen Moore. Brady, in his second season as Buffalo's offensive coordinator, oversaw a stellar year for quarterback Josh Allen, who is an NFL MVP finalist and has yet to throw an interception in the postseason.
This weekend, the Bills face the Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC Championship game, while the Philadelphia Eagles host the Washington Commanders for the NFC title. The Super Bowl is scheduled for February 9th.
