Following the arrest of an undocumented immigrant residing in a taxpayer-funded shelter near Boston for alleged criminal activities, Democratic Mayor Michelle Wu has not issued a public statement. The individual, Leonardo Andujar Sanchez, a 28-year-old Dominican Republic national, faces federal charges for possessing an AR-15, ammunition, over 400 grams of fentanyl with the intent to distribute, and cocaine estimated to be worth $750,000, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Massachusetts and Boston 25 News.
Sanchez was reportedly keeping the weapon and drugs within his room at the Quality Inn Hotel in Revere, Massachusetts, a designated migrant shelter funded by the government. Despite multiple requests for comment from Fox News Digital, Mayor Wu has not addressed the situation. This silence comes despite the shelter's proximity to downtown Boston and the city's sanctuary policies, which both Wu and Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey have pledged to uphold in the face of renewed federal immigration enforcement efforts.

Governor Healey, while expressing outrage over the incident and emphasizing the need for a stronger federal response to border security, has initiated inspections of all state shelters and a review of intake procedures. She stated, "It’s outrageous that this individual took advantage of our shelter system to engage in criminal activity… This further underscores our broken federal immigration system and the urgent need for Congress and the White House to act on a border security bill to prevent criminals from entering our communities."

Mayor Wu, who has previously asserted that Boston's sanctuary policies enhance public safety, has not commented on the arrest. This silence contrasts with her recent reaffirmation of the city's sanctuary status and her declaration that local law enforcement would not cooperate with federal deportation efforts.

This incident coincides with a reported increase in arrests of undocumented immigrants for sex crimes in the Boston area and across Massachusetts, as documented by Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Incoming border czar Tom Homan has previously criticized Mayor Wu's stance on immigration enforcement.
