Boxing enthusiasts eager to witness Jake Paul face a more formidable opponent were seemingly on the verge of getting their wish. Negotiations were reportedly advanced for a bout between Paul and the reigning WBO, WBA, and WBC super middleweight champion, Canelo Álvarez. However, the highly anticipated match has been called off, with Paul's camp claiming Álvarez backed out of the deal.

Álvarez's former promoter, Eddie Hearn, reportedly confirmed the initial agreement, but the fight is now off the table. Instead, Álvarez has inked a four-fight contract with Riyadh Season, committing to bouts in Saudi Arabia. Most Valuable Promotions (MVP), Paul's promotional company, released a statement indicating the fight would have occurred in Las Vegas during Cinco de Mayo weekend, a significant occasion for Mexican, Puerto Rican, and American boxing fans.

MVP expressed disappointment in the situation, emphasizing their commitment to integrity, transparency, and respect for the sport. They lamented that not everyone in the boxing community shares these principles.

Paul took to social media to voice his frustration, accusing Álvarez of "ducking" him and prioritizing personal gain over the pride of his Mexican supporters. He proclaimed himself the "new face of boxing," asserting his essential role in any major boxing event.

Paul further declared the current era as his own, emphasizing his youth, influence, and independent status. He confidently predicted that those who doubt him will eventually recognize his dominance in the sport.

While Álvarez will still fight on Cinco de Mayo weekend against an opponent yet to be named, he has also scheduled a title defense against Terence Crawford on September 13th. Paul, meanwhile, hinted at a July event in New York earlier this week.
