Costco Shakes Up Muffin Selection, Leaving Some Customers Craving the Classics

Created: JANUARY 25, 2025

Costco is transforming its muffin offerings, introducing new flavors and a smaller size, but not all members are pleased with the changes. A recent Reddit thread sparked by a self-identified Costco bakery employee in Texas revealed that several classic muffin flavors are being phased out. Gone are the days of banana nut, apple crumb, vanilla chocolate chunk, and almond poppyseed. These are being replaced by newer options like lemon raspberry, butter pecan, triple chocolate, and blueberries and cream.

While some locations are already carrying the new muffins, it appears the rollout is regional, with Texas serving as a test market. The new muffins are sold in individual eight-count packages for $6.99, a departure from the previous two-pack system for the larger muffins priced at $9.99, which also allowed customers to mix and match flavors. This mix-and-match option has been eliminated.

Reactions to the new muffins have been mixed. Some Reddit users praise the new flavors as more "elevated," while others express disappointment, finding the new muffins dry and crumbly and missing the moistness of their predecessors. Several users lamented the loss of the larger size and the ability to purchase a variety of flavors in one purchase.

This change to the muffin lineup follows other recent Costco adjustments, including switching rotisserie chicken packaging from plastic clamshells to bags and removing the churro from the food court menu. While some members worry about further changes, Costco's CFO has assured investors that the price of the iconic $1.50 hot dog and soda combo will remain unchanged.
