A Washington, D.C. restaurant server lost her job after voicing her potential refusal to serve members of the incoming Trump administration. Suzannah Van Rooy, formerly employed at Beuchert's Saloon on Capitol Hill, expressed her stance in an interview with the Washingtonian, stating she would decline service to anyone involved in sex trafficking or mass deportations. Her comments came amidst discussions about potential local resistance to Trump officials in public spaces, recalling past incidents like Sarah Huckabee Sanders' removal from a Virginia restaurant and protests against Kirstjen Nielsen.
Van Rooy's LinkedIn profile, since removed, reportedly highlighted her responsibilities, which included daily operations, messaging strategies, influencer relations, and managing events for political figures and VIPs. It also indicated her involvement as an organizer for Beto O'Rourke's 2022 Texas gubernatorial campaign.
Beuchert's Saloon swiftly condemned Van Rooy's statements to Fox News Digital, labeling them "reprehensible" and a violation of their "zero-tolerance policy on discrimination." The restaurant clarified that Van Rooy was a part-time server, not a manager, and issued public statements disavowing her views. They emphasized their commitment to being a welcoming space for all, regardless of political affiliation, and apologized for the incident. Initially, the restaurant expressed its intention to continue serving as a neighborhood establishment open to everyone. However, a subsequent statement revealed Van Rooy's termination, citing her unauthorized use of the restaurant's social media accounts to post offensive responses and defend her initial remarks. Beuchert's reiterated their commitment to inclusivity and distanced themselves from Van Rooy's actions.
