Debra Tice's Renewed Hope: A Mother's Quest for Her Son in Syria

Created: JANUARY 26, 2025

After more than a decade of relentless searching, Debra Tice has returned to Syria, driven by unwavering hope to find her son, journalist Austin Tice, who was kidnapped in 2012. Her return coincides with significant political upheaval in the country, offering a glimmer of possibility in the long and arduous search.

This marks Debra's first visit to Damascus in over ten years. Remarkably, she secured a meeting with Ahmed al-Sharaa, a key figure in the revolution that toppled Bashar al-Assad's regime. Tice described the meeting as "a very good meeting" and a surprising development in her quest.

With the assistance of Hostage Aid Worldwide, a non-profit organization, Tice gained access to abandoned prisons, providing a harrowing glimpse into the potential conditions her son endured. She challenged U.S. government officials who she feels haven't prioritized Austin's case to witness these conditions firsthand, believing it would spur more urgent action.

In a recent press conference, Tice expressed optimism about the new Trump administration, stating they had already initiated contact regarding Austin's situation. She conveyed a heartfelt message to her son, reaffirming her unwavering love and determination. Tice's faith remains a cornerstone of her strength and hope for Austin's eventual release.

The State Department confirmed ongoing efforts to locate Austin Tice, including collaboration with international partners and the exploration of previously hidden prisons. While these efforts haven't yet yielded definitive results, the search continues. Last month, Russian President Vladimir Putin pledged to seek Assad's assistance in the search after receiving a letter from Debra Tice. The outcome of this request remains to be seen.
