Education Department Cuts Millions in 'Woke' Spending, Sparks Debate

Created: JANUARY 24, 2025

The Department of Education recently announced the cancellation of nearly $350 million in contracts and grants, characterizing the spending as "wasteful and ideologically driven." This move has ignited discussion about the role of the federal government in education and the appropriateness of funding certain initiatives.

A significant portion of the cuts targeted Regional Educational Laboratories (RELs), a network of research centers that have existed for almost six decades. The Department of Education claims these programs were engaged in activities that did not benefit students or taxpayers, citing examples of promoting "equity audits" and "equity conversations." The Department intends to replace these contracts with agreements that better align with student learning and serve the needs of school districts and other educational stakeholders.

Further cuts affected Equity Assistance Centers, which received $33 million in grant funding. These centers provided training on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI), critical race theory, and gender identity. The Department of Education expressed concern about the nature of these training programs.

Additionally, over $600 million in grants to various institutions and nonprofits were terminated. These grants supported teacher training on topics including critical race theory, DEI, social justice activism, and concepts related to race and privilege. The Department of Education raised concerns about the appropriateness of these topics and the potential for divisive ideologies.

These actions align with President Trump's stated goal of abolishing the Department of Education, which he has criticized as ineffective and costly. He has pointed to the United States' ranking in education compared to other countries, arguing that the high spending per pupil does not translate to better outcomes.
