Elon Musk Donates Starlink Internet Service to California Wildfire Victims

Created: JANUARY 26, 2025

In response to the devastating California wildfires that have disrupted communication networks, SpaceX CEO Elon Musk has provided Starlink internet devices to those affected. Partnering with the nonprofit Grey Bull Rescue, Musk facilitated the deployment of these satellite-based internet units to first responders and residents in the Los Angeles area who have lost internet and cell service.

Grey Bull Rescue Chair Bryan Stern emphasized the vital role of communication during crises, especially in remote areas where infrastructure has been damaged. He expressed gratitude for the Starlink donation, highlighting its ability to provide essential communication capabilities in the fire-ravaged regions.

Stern revealed that emergency services in California had previously requested Starlink access, but bureaucratic hurdles had delayed implementation. He commended the private sector's swift response, stating that within six hours of the request, Grey Bull Rescue and Musk had provided the much-needed Starlink units. Musk personally visited the affected areas to oversee the delivery of additional devices.

Grey Bull Rescue, which utilizes Starlink for its own operations in communication-challenged environments, praised the technology's reliability. This donation follows a similar effort by Musk to provide Starlink internet to North Carolina residents affected by Hurricane Helene.
