After a tense nine-day search, escaped fugitive and murder suspect Michael Charles Burham is back in custody thanks to an observant homeowner and a barking dog. Pennsylvania State Police apprehended Burham "at gunpoint" on Saturday evening, concluding a multi-agency manhunt that spanned state and local jurisdictions.
The breakthrough came Saturday afternoon when residents of Cnewango Township in Warren County, Pennsylvania, reported a suspicious person. A homeowner, alerted by his dog's persistent barking, discovered Burham in his backyard. Burham reportedly claimed to be on a camping trip, but the homeowner recognized him and immediately contacted authorities.
Law enforcement swiftly established a large perimeter, deploying air support and K-9 units. By 5:50 p.m., Burham was apprehended while trying to hide in the woods. He was described as looking "tired" and "worn out," still wearing his inverted orange prison pants.
Burham’s capture brings an end to an intense search that began on July 6th when he escaped from the Warren County Jail using a rope fashioned from bedsheets. An Army veteran with survivalist skills, Burham was being held on kidnapping charges and is a suspect in a murder and rape case in New York. These charges are connected to an interstate crime spree that led to his arrest in South Carolina in May following a separate manhunt.
Authorities have confirmed that Burham will not be returned to the Warren County Jail. His future housing and potential additional charges related to his escape are yet to be determined.
