Star running back Saquon Barkley is absent from the New York Giants' mandatory minicamp this week as he seeks a contract that reflects his value to the team. Following his own football camp in New Jersey on Sunday, Barkley confirmed he wouldn't participate in team activities on Tuesday or Wednesday.
Barkley emphasized that his objective isn't to reset the running back market or demand the highest salary. In a statement, he expressed his desire for fair compensation based on his contributions both on and off the field. He confirmed ongoing discussions with the Giants and his readiness to sign a mutually agreeable deal. While acknowledging the July 17th deadline for franchise-tagged players, Barkley stated there's no immediate pressure to finalize an agreement.
The second overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft, Barkley has consistently performed as a top-tier running back. In the 2022 season, under coach Brian Daboll, he amassed 1,312 rushing yards and 10 touchdowns, adding 338 receiving yards. Reports indicate Barkley previously declined an offer approaching $14 million annually. Playing under the franchise tag would earn him slightly over $10 million for the upcoming season.
