An incident involving a Cuban migrant at an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facility in Miramar, Florida, resulted in an evacuation and a hazmat response on Thursday morning. The incident began around 7:15 a.m. during the screening process of a Cuban migrant who had brought an unidentified white powdery substance into the building.
A security guard reportedly fell ill after coming into contact with the substance, prompting immediate notification of authorities. Hazmat teams from Miramar Fire Rescue and Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue responded to the scene, donning protective gear and employing safety protocols. The building was evacuated, and individuals present were quarantined until the substance could be identified.
The security guard and the Cuban migrant were transported to a local hospital as a precautionary measure. Both were treated and released. The Cuban migrant has been arrested by ICE, and criminal charges related to the incident are pending.
Two additional individuals were also transported to the hospital for non-life-threatening conditions – one for diabetes and the other for anxiety and asthma. Local news station WSVN reported that an eyewitness observed an employee becoming dizzy and fainting shortly before officials arrived at the scene. Footage captured individuals who were scheduled to be at the facility congregating across the street while the situation unfolded.
The all-clear was given at 9:45 a.m., allowing ICE to resume normal operations. The agency has not disclosed the identity of the migrant or the nature of the substance. Homeland Security Investigations, the Drug Enforcement Administration, and the FBI are now investigating the incident.
