Jeopardy! Contestants Stumped by Surprisingly Simple Super Bowl History Question

Created: JANUARY 26, 2025

Thursday night's "Final Jeopardy!" question about Super Bowl history left sports enthusiasts across the nation bewildered, as contestants failed to answer what seemed like an easy clue.

The clue, focusing on Super Bowl appearances before Neil Armstrong's moon landing, read: "It's the only team to play in the Super Bowl before Neil Armstrong's moon walk that has not been back to the big game since."

Jets fan upset

The correct answer, the New York Jets, seemed obvious to many viewers, especially considering the limited number of teams that participated in the Super Bowl between 1967 and 1969: the Green Bay Packers (twice), the Kansas City Chiefs, the Oakland Raiders, the Jets, and the Baltimore Colts.

However, the contestants struggled. One guessed the Cleveland Browns, a team that has never reached the Super Bowl. Another offered an even more perplexing answer: the New York Giants, a team with five Super Bowl appearances and two victories, all after 1986. The final contestant suggested "Houston," a city that has hosted the Super Bowl three times but whose team hasn't played in the game.

Host Ken Jennings commented on the Jets' long drought since their Super Bowl III victory, a streak that continues with their elimination from playoff contention this year.
