A Las Vegas man received a substantial prison sentence for a shocking courtroom assault on a judge earlier this year. Deobra Redden, 31, will serve between 26 and 65 years for the January 3rd attack on Clark County District Court Judge Mary Kay Holthus. The incident, captured on video, showed Redden leaping over the judge's bench and physically assaulting her.

Redden pleaded guilty but mentally ill in September to attempted murder and other related charges. Judge Holthus, 62, testified about the harrowing experience, stating she feared for her life during the attack. The assault occurred as she was about to sentence Redden in a separate felony battery case. Courtroom footage reveals Redden grabbing the judge's hair and knocking an American flag onto them during the struggle. While Judge Holthus sustained injuries, she did not require hospitalization.

Redden's defense attorney, Carl Arnold, indicated that Redden was not taking prescribed medication for schizophrenia at the time of the attack. Arnold explained that the guilty plea acknowledged responsibility while also recognizing the influence of Redden's untreated mental illness on his actions. During his sentencing, Redden maintained that he had no intention of killing Judge Holthus. He expressed remorse for his actions, emphasizing that he is not a "bad person." Redden will be eligible for parole after 2050.
