Former Olympic cyclist Inga Thompson, a self-described lifelong Democrat, surprisingly supported Donald Trump's presidential bid due to his commitment to protecting women's sports. A key element of Trump's campaign was his pledge to prevent transgender women from competing against biological women. This resonated with Thompson, who has been a vocal advocate for keeping biological males out of women's sports.
In a candid interview, Thompson revealed her evolving perspective on Trump. Initially critical of him, she explained that his stance on women's sports became a deciding factor. "If he’s going to protect women, I will vote for him," she stated, emphasizing the significance of this issue for her generation.

Thompson's advocacy has come at a cost. She lost a director position with a cycling team after protesting the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI)'s transgender athlete policy. She expressed disappointment with the Democratic Party's support for trans inclusion, questioning their understanding of the impact on women athletes.

Thompson believes this is not a partisan issue, but a matter of common sense. She feels the Democrats have "lost the plot" by not supporting the Protection of Women in Sports Act. A recent New York Times/Ipsos poll supports her view, showing that a majority of Democrats oppose transgender athletes competing in women's sports.

This sentiment was reflected in the House of Representatives, where two Democrats joined Republicans in voting for the Protection of Women and Girls In Sports Act. This bill aims to ensure that students participate in sports based on their biological sex at birth.
