Joseph Eaton, 34, faces a 16-count indictment for the murders of his parents and two family friends in Bowdoin, Maine, earlier this year. The indictment includes charges related to the subsequent highway shootings where he allegedly injured three people while firing at passing vehicles.
Officials report Eaton confessed to the killings at a Bowdoin property following his release from prison. The victims were identified as his parents, Cynthia (62) and David Eaton (66), along with Robert (72) and Patti Eger (62).
Shortly after the discovery of the bodies, Eaton allegedly opened fire on cars traveling on Interstate 295 in Yarmouth, injuring three occupants of one vehicle. The indictment encompasses nine counts of firearm theft, a count of firearm possession by a prohibited person, and aggravated cruelty to animals for the killing of the Egers' dog. It alleges Eaton stole nine firearms from the Eger residence.

A grand jury also indicted Eaton on 11 charges connected to the highway shootings, including aggravated attempted murder, alleging his intent to cause multiple deaths. Eaton is scheduled for a court appearance on June 28th. He has been incarcerated since his arrest near the highway shooting scene.
Eaton's parents were reportedly staying with the Egers after his mother collected him from prison on April 14th. He had served time for a sentence revocation related to an aggravated assault conviction in Florida, adding to a history of criminal activity in Maine, Kansas, and Florida. Authorities are still investigating Eaton's motive, but a note found at the crime scene alluded to freeing someone from pain and desiring a new life.
