Mexico Deploys Troops to US Border Following Tariff Agreement with US

Created: JANUARY 27, 2025

Following a deal with the United States to avert trade tariffs, Mexico has initiated the deployment of 10,000 troops to its border with the U.S. This deployment is a response to President Trump's concerns regarding border security and the flow of illegal substances and individuals into the country. The Mexican National Guard and Army troops were observed arriving at the border between Ciudad Juárez and El Paso, Texas, marking the commencement of this operation.

The deployment is concentrated in Ciudad Juárez and Tijuana, where the Mexican government plans to station at least 1,650 and 1,949 troops, respectively. This action follows an agreement reached between President Trump and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, in which Mexico committed to deploying troops to its northern border in exchange for a pause on impending U.S. tariffs on Mexican imports. President Trump emphasized the importance of border security for American safety, referencing a campaign promise to address the influx of illegal aliens and drugs.

The agreement also includes a commitment from President Trump to address the issue of American guns being trafficked into Mexico, which contributes to cartel violence.

Mexican patrols were already active near Tijuana, and service members were observed removing ladders and ropes used for illegal crossings near Ciudad Juárez. National Guard leader José Luis Santos Iza stated that the operation aims to establish permanent border surveillance and primarily focuses on preventing drug trafficking, particularly fentanyl, from Mexico to the United States.
