Miami Mayor Francis Suarez's Stance on LGBTQ+ Issues Sets Him Apart in 2024 GOP Field

Created: JANUARY 21, 2025

Miami Mayor Francis Suarez, a Republican presidential candidate, has distinguished himself from other GOP contenders with his vocal support for LGBTQ+ issues. This stance contrasts sharply with figures like Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, former President Trump, and others in the Republican field.

Suarez criticized DeSantis's efforts to restrict instruction on sexual orientation and gender identity in Florida schools, calling the measures "excessive." He emphasized the importance of sex education for young people while cautioning against "indoctrination." Suarez's position aligns with his history of supporting the LGBTQ+ community in Miami, including praising the city's transgender residents and celebrating Pride Month.

He signed Miami’s LGBTQ Ordinance, which recognizes the community's contributions to the city and establishes a database for LGBTQ+ businesses. He also publicly acknowledged Transgender Day of Remembrance and Resiliency. Images from 2018 show Suarez participating in the Boston Pride Parade.

Suarez defended his approach, stating that conservatism doesn't necessitate hate and emphasizing his commitment to unity and serving all citizens. This inclusive approach diverges from other 2024 GOP hopefuls who have taken stances against sex change treatments for minors and the use of pronouns in the military.

Meanwhile, Suarez is facing an ethics investigation concerning outside payments he received for private consulting work. He has denied any conflicts of interest and accused the Miami Herald, which reported on the investigation, of bias. The Democratic National Committee has criticized Suarez for allegedly prioritizing personal gain over public service.

Despite these challenges, Suarez has a strong track record of electoral success in Miami, having been elected and re-elected with substantial mandates.
