New York AG Letitia James Refuses to Dismiss Civil Fraud Case Against Trump

Created: JANUARY 25, 2025

New York Attorney General Letitia James has affirmed her commitment to pursuing the civil fraud lawsuit against former President Donald Trump, his family, and associated businesses. This decision comes despite Trump's recent request to dismiss the case "for the greater good of the country" following a substantial $454 million judgment against him. James's office maintains that the legal proceedings will continue regardless of Trump's presidential status, emphasizing that presidents are not exempt from civil litigation stemming from non-official actions. The Attorney General's office clarified that the ongoing lawsuit will not impede Trump's ability to fulfill his presidential duties, and that the final judgment does not pertain to any actions he may take in office. Furthermore, they highlighted the involvement of 14 other defendants in the case, whose liability remains unaffected by Trump's inauguration. The case is currently under appeal, and James's office awaits the court's decision.
