Referee Admits Mistake in Bizarre Ejection Reversal During 76ers-Spurs Game

Created: JANUARY 26, 2025

A strange sequence of events unfolded during Monday night's NBA matchup between the Philadelphia 76ers and the San Antonio Spurs, involving an overturned ejection, a rescinded technical foul, and a referee admitting a mistake. Early in the second quarter, 76ers center Andre Drummond was ejected for a foul on Spurs rookie Victor Wembanyama. However, after reviewing the play, officials reversed the ejection and brought Drummond back onto the court, even though he had already left the floor.

Referee Jenna Schroeder, who made the initial ejection call, was overheard apologizing to 76ers coach Nick Nurse, admitting she had made an error. Instead of the technical foul on Drummond, Wembanyama was assessed a technical for flopping. 76ers guard Tyrese Maxey took the resulting free throw, but officials then rescinded the technical altogether, removing the point from the scoreboard.

According to crew chief Curtis Blair, the review revealed that Drummond had stepped on Wembanyama's foot, and the contact was deemed incidental. Wembanyama himself confirmed he simply tripped after Drummond stepped on his foot and wasn't expecting a foul. Nurse described the entire situation as “really strange.”

Adding to the unusual night, Sixers star Joel Embiid was also ejected later in the game after receiving two technical fouls for unsportsmanlike conduct. He was seen approaching Schroeder and had to be restrained. Embiid did not address the media following the game.
