Off-Duty Indiana Deputy Fatally Shoots Armed Man During Welfare Check

A Vigo County sheriff's deputy, while off-duty, shot and killed a man who reportedly brandished a firearm during a welfare check near Terre Haute, Indiana. Deputies responded to the residence on Wednesday afternoon following concerns about a potentially suicidal individual. The off-duty deputy, who initially arrived unarmed, joined the responding officers and was provided with a department-issued rifle after the man was observed with firearms. Despite commands to disarm, the man allegedly aimed his rifle at the officers, leading the off-duty deputy to discharge his weapon. The deceased has been identified as 45-year-old James Dockery of Terre Haute. The involved deputy, a 10-year veteran of the force, is currently on administrative leave as the Indiana State Police conduct an investigation into the incident.
