A tragic incident unfolded on Christmas morning at the Ross Correctional Institution in Chillicothee, Ohio, resulting in the death of Corrections Officer Andrew Lansing. Officer Lansing was fatally assaulted by an inmate, identified as 27-year-old Rashawn Cannon.
The Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction (ODRC) confirmed the assault occurred around 7:15 am on Christmas Day. Cannon, who was serving time for felonious assault and weapons charges with a projected release date of August 5, 2030, has been transferred to the Southern Ohio Correctional Facility following the attack.
ODRC Director Annette Chambers-Smith expressed profound sorrow over the loss, describing it as a tragedy beyond comprehension. She highlighted the devastating impact of losing a staff member, particularly on Christmas Day, at the hands of an inmate. Chambers-Smith lauded Officer Lansing's long and respected career at the institution and emphasized the profound impact his death has had on his family, colleagues, and the entire agency. She requested thoughts and prayers for Officer Lansing's loved ones.
Ohio Representative Mark Johnson also offered condolences, remembering Officer Lansing as an exemplary corrections officer. He expressed his deep sadness over the tragic event, occurring while many were celebrating the holiday. Johnson urged prayers for the officer's grieving family.
Ohio Governor Mike DeWine ordered flags to be flown at half-staff in Officer Lansing's honor until sunset on the day of his funeral. The Ross Correctional Institution is currently operating under restricted movement as the Ohio State Highway Patrol conducts a thorough investigation into the incident.
