Numerous athletes from the 2024 Paris Summer Olympics are slated to receive replacement medals due to tarnishing and deterioration of the originals. The Monnaie de Paris, responsible for crafting the 5,084 medals, confirmed it will replace the affected medals in the first quarter of 2025 after athletes reported issues as early as August.
The mint has revised its varnishing process to address the problem. While the exact number of replacements remains undisclosed, reports suggest it exceeds 100. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) is collaborating with the mint to ensure the replacements are identical to the originals.
The IOC emphasized its commitment to replacing all damaged medals, ensuring they are engraved identically to the originals. American skateboarder Nyjah Huston, among others, publicly highlighted the issue on social media, showcasing the deterioration of his bronze medal after minimal wear.
French swimmers Yohann Ndoye-Brouard and Clément Secchi also reported similar problems with their medals chipping. Notably, the medals incorporate polished pieces of iron salvaged from Eiffel Tower renovations.
