Person of Interest in Portland Murders Has Troubled Past, Early Prison Release

Created: JANUARY 24, 2025

A man suspected of involvement in the deaths of four women in the Portland area has a history of legal troubles, including a prior incident where he reportedly attacked a police dog. Jesse Lee Calhoun, 38, is currently the primary person of interest in these cases and is in custody. His past includes several confrontations with law enforcement, and he was previously granted early release from prison during the tenure of former Oregon Governor Kate Brown.

Records from the Oregon Department of Corrections indicate Calhoun faced charges in 2019 that included unauthorized use of a vehicle (three counts), assaulting a public safety officer, and first-degree burglary. Court documents related to this case describe a struggle during Calhoun's arrest, where he allegedly resisted SWAT officers, attempted to choke a police K-9, and repeatedly kicked an officer.

Originally scheduled for release in June 2022, Calhoun benefited from an early release program in July 2021 for offenders meeting specific criteria. Former Governor Brown expressed her deep concern for the victims, their families, and those affected by these tragic events.

Calhoun's record also shows a prior prison term from 2009 to 2011 for a fourth-degree assault conviction. He is currently in custody after a request to revoke his clemency was made to current Governor Tina Kotek. This revocation could potentially keep him incarcerated until June 9, 2024. It's important to note that, as of now, Calhoun has not been formally charged in connection with the deaths of the four women.
