Post-Game Flag Planting Sparks Brawls in North Carolina, Florida Football Games

Created: JANUARY 25, 2025

Following a weekend of intense rivalry matchups, two college football games were marred by post-game altercations involving attempted flag plantings. Hours after a similar incident between Michigan and Ohio State, players from N.C. State and North Carolina clashed on the field in Chapel Hill after the Wolfpack's 35-30 victory.

UNC NC State brawl

N.C. State players attempted to plant their flag on the Tar Heels' midfield logo, leading to a physical confrontation involving numerous players from both teams. Punches were thrown, and players piled on top of each other before officials and coaches intervened. UNC receiver J.J. Jones reportedly threw the N.C. State flag into the stands, further escalating the situation. The Wolfpack eventually celebrated with their fans after order was restored.

Later that day, tensions flared between Florida and Florida State players, although the situation was diffused more quickly. While no punches appeared to be thrown, coaches Mike Norvell and Billy Napier engaged in a heated exchange after Norvell tossed aside a Florida flag. This incident followed Florida's decisive 31-11 victory over the Seminoles in Tallahassee.

In contrast, the renewed rivalry game between Texas and Texas A&M, played at College Station after a long hiatus, concluded without any similar post-game incidents.

The UNC-N.C. State game marked the final game for Tar Heels coach Mack Brown, whose departure was announced earlier in the week. N.C. State secured the win with a late touchdown by Hollywood Smothers. Both teams now await their bowl game assignments, while UNC also begins the search for Brown's successor. The Gators also await their bowl destination, while Florida State ends a disappointing 2-10 season.
