The New Jersey Devils have solidified their forward lines by signing Timo Meier to a substantial eight-year contract worth $70.4 million. This agreement keeps the impactful forward in New Jersey through the 2030-31 NHL season.

The announcement, made by General Manager Tom Fitzgerald just before the NHL draft in Nashville, secures the 26-year-old Swiss player at an average annual value of $8.8 million. The contract structure is notable, starting at $12 million in the upcoming season and gradually decreasing to $7.2 million in the final year.

Fitzgerald expressed his enthusiasm, stating, "Securing Timo at the trade deadline was a significant step, but having him commit to the Devils long-term is even more exciting. His unique combination of playing style, scoring prowess, and physicality will be a tremendous asset to our team."

This signing comes on the heels of other key moves by the Devils, including acquiring Tyler Toffoli from Calgary and re-signing Erik Haula and Jesper Bratt. Fitzgerald also orchestrated a sign-and-trade, sending Damon Severson to Columbus for a draft pick used in the Toffoli deal.

After a playoff appearance last season, their first since 2017-18, the Devils are clearly focused on building a competitive roster. Meier, who started his NHL career with San Jose in 2016-17, achieved a career-high 40 goals and 17 power-play goals this past season. While his playoff statistics were modest (two goals and two assists), his physical presence on the ice proved invaluable during the series against the Rangers and Hurricanes.
