Following the devastating midair collision between an Army Black Hawk helicopter and an American Airlines passenger jet near Reagan National Airport, authorities have released the identities of some of the victims as investigations into the cause of the accident begin.
The wife of Chief Warrant Officer 2 Andrew Eaves confirmed his death via social media, expressing grief and requesting prayers for the families affected. Mississippi Governor Tate Reeves also offered condolences and support. Crew chief Ryan O'Hara was also identified, remembered by his Georgia high school JROTC as a dedicated member of their community. His family, including a wife and young child, are in mourning.

Details about the helicopter's crew have emerged. The instructor pilot, described as highly experienced with 1,000 flight hours, was conducting an evaluation flight with the co-pilot, a woman with 500 flight hours, a standard level of experience. Both were familiar with the area and the flight path, a route frequently used by military and government aircraft. Recovery efforts have begun, with one set of remains recovered so far.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth confirmed the Black Hawk was on a routine annual proficiency training flight. He expressed condolences and emphasized the ongoing investigation to determine the exact circumstances of the collision. Georgia Governor Brian Kemp also extended sympathies to the families of Ryan O’Hara and Sam Lilley, a crew member aboard the American Airlines jet.

The collision occurred around 9:00 PM local time, prompting a ground stop at Reagan National Airport. DC Fire and EMS Chief John A. Donnelly confirmed the grim transition from rescue to recovery operations, with 27 bodies recovered from the plane and one from the helicopter. DC Mayor Muriel Bowser acknowledged the challenging conditions faced by first responders. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy pledged a thorough investigation, highlighting the clear weather conditions and standard flight patterns at the time of the incident.

President Trump called the incident a preventable situation. Vice President JD Vance urged prayers for those involved. The investigation is ongoing, with authorities working to determine the cause of this tragic event.
