Prigozhin's Uncertain Future: Exile, Putin's Vengeance, and the Wagner Group's Fate

Created: JANUARY 25, 2025

Following a short-lived rebellion against Russian forces, Wagner Group leader Yevgeny Prigozhin's future hangs precariously in the balance. His troops briefly seized Rostov-on-Don and advanced towards Moscow before a deal brokered with Russian President Vladimir Putin sent Prigozhin into exile in Belarus. This agreement, which involved dropping charges against him, has sparked intense speculation and raised questions about Putin's intentions and Prigozhin's long-term survival.

Retired Adm. James Stavridis, speaking on "Meet the Press," likened the situation to the Game of Thrones, emphasizing the critical need to eliminate the king if power is challenged. He pointed out Prigozhin's failure to do so, leaving him isolated from his 35,000 fighters and vulnerable like "a snake whose head has been cut off from its body." This separation from his protective force raises serious concerns about Prigozhin's safety.

Belarus, a supporter of Russia's war efforts, will be Prigozhin's place of exile. However, doubts linger about his safety. Stavridis highlighted Putin's history of ruthlessness towards perceived adversaries, suggesting that Prigozhin might not survive long. He emphasized Putin's unforgiving nature, predicting that the Russian president will likely seek retribution. CBS News' David Martin echoed these concerns on "Face The Nation," suggesting that Putin might resort to poison, a known tactic for eliminating rivals. He advised Prigozhin to maintain close protection and exercise extreme caution with food and drink.
