In a surprising move aimed at revitalizing their roster, the New York Rangers have traded captain Jacob Trouba to the Anaheim Ducks. The trade comes as the Rangers grapple with a recent slump, dropping six of their last seven games. General Manager Chris Drury orchestrated the deal in an attempt to shake up the team's core.
Trouba, a 30-year-old defenseman, joined the Rangers in 2019 after being acquired from the Winnipeg Jets. He subsequently signed a substantial seven-year, $56 million contract and was named the team's 28th captain before the 2022-2023 season. However, his time with the Rangers has been marked by inconsistency, culminating in his recent benching.
The Rangers receive 25-year-old defenseman Urho Vaakanainen and a 2025 fourth-round draft pick in exchange for Trouba. Reports indicate that the Ducks will absorb the entirety of Trouba's remaining contract, which extends through the next season.
Despite their recent struggles, the Rangers maintain a 13-10-1 record and remain in playoff contention. The Ducks, holding a 10-11-3 record, hope that Trouba's veteran presence will provide leadership to their developing team.
This trade marks another instance of a Rangers captain departing under challenging circumstances. Previous captains Ryan McDonagh and Ryan Callahan were also traded to the Tampa Bay Lightning. Drury himself, the Rangers' current general manager, had his contract bought out, effectively ending his playing career with the team.
Trouba's performance this season has been underwhelming, recording only six points in 24 games. Consequently, he was relegated to a third-pair defenseman role, a significant drop from his usual position on the first or second pairing. In Anaheim, he will rejoin former Rangers teammates Ryan Strome and Frank Vatrano.
The Rangers will face the Pittsburgh Penguins next, while the Ducks will take on the Minnesota Wild. It remains uncertain whether Trouba will make his debut with the Ducks in their upcoming game.
