The wrestling world was abuzz Tuesday night when Ricky Starks unexpectedly appeared on WWE NXT, just hours after his release from All Elite Wrestling. Among those surprised was NXT superstar Roxanne Perez.
Perez, a two-time NXT Women's Champion vying for a historic third title at NXT Vengeance Day, expressed her excitement in a recent interview. Having known Starks since her early days in the Texas wrestling scene, she shared her genuine surprise at his appearance, emphasizing that she was unaware of his arrival until seeing it unfold on screen alongside everyone else.
"It was incredible," Perez remarked. "I've known Ricky since I was 15. We both came up in Texas, so our paths crossed frequently. I had no clue he'd be there. I didn't even see him in the crowd. It was a total shock seeing him on the screen, and I was so thrilled. He's a fantastic performer and a wonderful person. He deserves all the success coming his way."
Starks' absence from AEW programming since March had led to speculation about his future. His appearances in independent promotions like Game Changer Wrestling, House of Glory, and DEFY fueled further intrigue. His NXT arrival was met with a roaring reception from the fans.
Addressing the crowd, Starks declared, "You clearly know who I am. If NXT is the future of wrestling, then it needs a true superstar to lead the way. If this is the hottest brand, then it needs the hottest free agent in the game."
Perez expressed her hope for a chance to collaborate with Starks in NXT. "To have him here now, and potentially work with him, would be an amazing opportunity," she stated.
Perez is set to challenge for the NXT Women's Championship in a fatal four-way match against current champion Giulia, Bayley, and Cora Jade at Vengeance Day, which takes place Saturday at 5:30 p.m. ET in Washington, D.C.
