Schiff Criticizes Trump Amidst California Wildfires, Urges Unified Response

Created: JANUARY 26, 2025

Senator Adam Schiff expressed concerns about President-elect Donald Trump's potential response to the devastating California wildfires, emphasizing the need for a unified approach regardless of political affiliation. Speaking with MSNBC's Joy Reid, Schiff highlighted the widespread impact of the fires, stating that they affect everyone, irrespective of their political views.

Multiple wildfires, including the Palisades, Eaton, Hurst, Lidia, and Sunset fires, are currently ravaging Los Angeles County, according to Cal Fire. Schiff stressed the importance of a president who views all Americans equally, especially during natural disasters, implicitly criticizing Trump's past rhetoric. He expressed hope that the incoming president would recognize the shared devastation caused by these events and the need for federal assistance.

Schiff also mentioned the challenges faced by Pasadena residents in insuring their homes, highlighting the potential financial burdens faced by those affected by the Eaton fire. He underscored the commitment of himself, Senator Padilla, and Governor Newsom to providing necessary resources to all constituents, regardless of their political leanings.

Meanwhile, Trump took to social media to criticize Governor Newsom, suggesting that the governor's refusal to sign a water restoration declaration contributed to the fires. Trump claimed this declaration would have diverted water from excess rain and snow melt to fire-prone areas. However, a spokesperson for Newsom dismissed Trump's claims as "pure fiction" and accused him of politicizing the tragedy. Newsom, in an interview with CNN's Anderson Cooper, expressed his frustration with Trump's comments but declined to elaborate further.
