Seffner Sinkhole Reappears: Florida Residents Safe Despite Recurrence

Created: JANUARY 27, 2025

A sinkhole in Seffner, Florida, has resurfaced for the third time in the past decade, stirring memories of the tragic 2013 incident where a man lost his life. Authorities have confirmed the sinkhole's reappearance on a property in Seffner, the same location where a devastating sinkhole swallowed Jeffrey Bush in 2013 while he slept. Although the current sinkhole is estimated to be approximately 12 feet by 12 feet, local officials have assured residents that they can remain safely in their homes, urging them to avoid the affected area until repairs are completed.

The 2013 incident remains a somber reminder of the unpredictable nature of sinkholes. Jeffrey Bush's brother, Jeremy Bush, attempted a rescue but was unsuccessful. Recovery efforts for Jeffrey's body were ultimately abandoned due to the extreme instability of the ground, leading to the demolition of three homes, including Bush's and two adjacent properties.

John-Paul Lavandeira, representing Hillsborough County code enforcement, explained that the current approach to managing the sinkhole involves filling it with a mixture of gravel and a flexible liquid. This method is designed to contain future recurrences within a controlled area, allowing for easier management and remediation. The site is currently secured with double fences to prevent access and ensure public safety. The sinkhole had previously reappeared in 2015 and was successfully remediated by the county. Lavandeira emphasized that sinkhole recurrence in this manner is not unusual and that the chosen method of filling allows for a controlled response to future incidents.

This recurring sinkhole underscores the ongoing challenge posed by natural phenomena and the importance of proactive management strategies. While sinkholes are beyond human control, authorities are employing controlled remediation techniques and preventative measures to mitigate risks and ensure the safety of the community.
