A second suspect was also present in the vehicle; one suspect died at the scene, while the other was injured and transported to a local hospital for treatment.

The Border Patrol Union expressed condolences, offering prayers for the agent's family, friends, and colleagues. Vermont's elected officials, including Senator Bernie Sanders, Senator Peter Welch, and Representative Becca Balint, also issued statements of sympathy and support for the fallen agent and the Border Patrol.

The shooting occurred shortly after President Donald Trump's second inauguration, during which he emphasized border security and support for law enforcement as key priorities.
