In the latest Fox News national survey, former President Donald Trump's lead in the Republican presidential nomination race has grown even larger. His support among GOP primary voters has risen to 56%, up from 53% last month, while Florida Governor Ron DeSantis remains in second place with 22%.
This represents a significant jump in Trump's advantage over DeSantis, expanding from 15 points in February to a commanding 34 points currently. Other Republican contenders are far behind, all polling in the single digits: Vivek Ramaswamy at 5%, Mike Pence and Tim Scott tied at 4%, Nikki Haley at 3%, and Chris Christie, Larry Elder, and Asa Hutchinson each at 1%. Three more recent entrants to the race—North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum, Miami Mayor Francis Suarez, and former Texas Representative Will Hurd—garner less than 1% support.
Trump's solidified position is further underscored by the fact that only 13% of GOP primary voters say they would never vote for him, the lowest such figure among the leading Republican candidates. This marks a decrease from 18% in October 2015 and a dramatic shift from the early 2016 primaries when 59% said they would not consider him. Conversely, former Vice President Mike Pence faces the highest resistance, with a third of GOP primary voters saying they would not support him.
For Republican primary voters, winning the 2024 election is paramount. Seventy percent emphasize the importance of a candidate who can defeat President Biden, while 55% prioritize shared views on issues. Both groups overwhelmingly favor Trump, with 57% of those focused on electability and 63% of those focused on issues choosing him over DeSantis. Furthermore, a significant majority (80%) of Trump supporters say they would vote for the eventual GOP nominee even if Trump doesn't secure the nomination, with only 6% saying they would abstain.
Regarding Trump's legal challenges, Republican primary voters are divided, with 30% believing they will harm his general election prospects, 25% thinking they will help, and 43% feeling they won't make a difference. Democrats and independents are significantly more likely to believe the legal issues will hurt Trump's chances. While a majority of voters (55%) think the Justice Department's treatment of Trump is politically motivated, more voters (56%) believe Trump acted illegally in his handling of classified documents than say the same of President Biden (37%).
On the Democratic side, President Biden maintains a strong lead with 64% support, followed by Robert Kennedy Jr. at 17% and Marianne Williamson at 10%. Similar to Trump, only 10% of Democratic primary voters say they would never vote for Biden. The poll, conducted jointly by Beacon Research (D) and Shaw & Company Research (R), surveyed 1,005 registered voters nationwide.
Interestingly, scholar and activist Cornel West's third-party candidacy has garnered potential support from 17% of voters, including 12% of GOP primary voters, 21% of Democratic primary voters, and 32% of Black voters.
