Former President Donald Trump announced his involvement in mediating peace negotiations between Russia and Ukraine during a press gathering in West Palm Beach, Florida, on Sunday. He expressed his belief that both President Zelenskyy and President Putin desire an end to the ongoing conflict.
Speaking at Palm Beach International Airport, Trump stated he is actively working towards peace, emphasizing that the war should never have begun. He confirmed Zelenskyy's participation in the discussions and indicated his willingness to allow European nations to procure American-made weaponry currently supplied to Ukraine.
Trump conveyed his perception that Putin, despite Russia's military strength and historical victories, is keen to cease hostilities. He also believes Zelenskyy shares the same desire for peace.
Preliminary discussions between the U.S. and Russia are scheduled to commence this week in Saudi Arabia. While Ukraine's direct involvement was not initially anticipated, Trump's National Security Advisor, Michael Waltz, clarified on Fox News Sunday that the negotiations would address "key tenants" to ensure a lasting resolution. Waltz reiterated Trump's stance on the need for the conflict to conclude, acknowledging the significant burden of support borne by the United States.
Trump's remarks followed Zelenskyy's appearance on NBC's "Meet the Press," where the Ukrainian president asserted Putin's apprehension towards Trump and expressed confidence in Trump's ability to facilitate peace negotiations, while simultaneously cautioning against trusting Putin's promises.
