Wisconsin Republicans Express Doubts About Trump's 2024 Prospects, Favor DeSantis

Created: JANUARY 27, 2025

A recent Marquette University Law School Poll has sparked concern among some Wisconsin Republicans regarding former President Trump's electability in the 2024 presidential race. The poll reveals Florida Governor Ron DeSantis leading Trump by a significant 16-point margin in a hypothetical head-to-head primary matchup.

State Senator Duey Stroebel, a Wisconsin Republican, interprets these results as a reflection of growing doubts about Trump's general election viability, particularly in light of his recent indictment. Stroebel praised DeSantis's "common sense, level-headed approach" and described him as "very, very impressive." He acknowledged Trump's past presidential achievements but emphasized the importance of choosing a candidate capable of winning a general election.

Sawyer County Republican Party Chairman John Righeimer echoed these sentiments, noting increased enthusiasm for DeSantis. Righeimer expressed concerns about Trump's ability to win a general election, suggesting Democrats would prefer to run against him. He believes DeSantis would present a more formidable challenge, forcing Democrats to actively defend their policies.

Stroebel also highlighted policy differences between the two candidates, suggesting Trump has adopted more liberal stances on issues like abortion, while DeSantis maintains a consistently conservative record. He believes discerning voters recognize these distinctions.

Stroebel emphasized the importance of nominating a winning candidate, arguing that a segment of the population remains staunchly opposed to Trump, making a general election victory difficult. He pointed to the 21% of undecided respondents in the Marquette poll as a potential advantage for DeSantis.

The Marquette poll, often considered a reliable indicator of Wisconsin political sentiment, suggests a tight race between Biden and DeSantis if the election were held today. However, the poll indicates a more challenging outlook for Republicans in a potential Trump-Biden rematch.
