WSU Offers Free 'Queer Pole Fit' Classes to Promote Inclusivity and Challenge Stigma

Created: JANUARY 26, 2025

Washington State University (WSU) has introduced complimentary "Queer Pole Fit" classes, aiming to dismantle the stigma associated with pole dancing and foster an inclusive environment for the LGBTQ+ community and their allies.

These no-registration-required sessions take place every Friday and are specifically designed for individuals who identify as LGBTQ+ and those who support them, as stated on the university's official website. The program emphasizes creating a welcoming atmosphere where participants can feel comfortable challenging conventional notions about pole dancing. Led by queer instructors, the classes encourage attendees to embrace their individuality while enjoying a fun and physically engaging experience.

Laura Yasinitsky, WSU's University Recreation fitness coordinator, explained to the university's news publication, The Daily Evergreen, that the classes aim to provide a welcoming space for those who may have felt excluded or unsupported in their fitness journeys. The program emphasizes acceptance and encourages participants to express themselves authentically.

Yasinitsky highlighted the program's objective of breaking down barriers and creating a safe space for beginners to explore something new. This focus on inclusivity and accessibility is central to the program's mission.

Queer Pole Fit instructor Ri Scovel noted that by specifically targeting the queer community, the course challenges the traditional association of pole dancing with women, thus expanding the sport's reach to a frequently overlooked group. This approach also provides a platform for a dance form that often carries stigma.

Launched in January of the previous year, the classes continue to gain popularity and attract new participants. Fox News Digital contacted Washington State University for further comments on the program but has not yet received a response.
