49ers Committed to Brock Purdy Despite Down Season

Created: JANUARY 26, 2025

The San Francisco 49ers experienced a challenging 2024 season, and quarterback Brock Purdy's performance reflected the team's struggles. While injuries to key offensive players like Christian McCaffrey and Brandon Aiyuk undoubtedly played a role, Purdy's statistical output declined compared to his impressive debut the previous year. His passing yards decreased by around 400, touchdowns dropped from 31 to 20, and interceptions rose to 12, leading to a lower quarterback rating of 96.1.

Despite missing the playoffs for the first time since 2020, 49ers General Manager John Lynch affirmed the team's commitment to Purdy. Lynch expressed confidence in Purdy as their quarterback and emphasized their desire to keep him in San Francisco long-term. He acknowledged the difficulties the team faced throughout the season but praised Purdy's leadership and consistent high-level play amidst the challenges.

Purdy, the final pick of the 2022 NFL Draft, is now eligible for a significant contract extension. Having played the past season on a base salary of under $1 million, he could be in line for a substantial raise. Spotrac estimates his market value at $59.7 million annually, which would be the highest in the league. A potential four-year deal worth nearly $239 million has been suggested, exceeding contracts signed by quarterbacks like Kyler Murray, Deshaun Watson, and others. Such a contract would place Purdy among the top 14 highest-paid quarterbacks in NFL history, all of whom signed their deals since 2020.
